Health & Vitality
What Does It Mean to Age With Vitality?
It's not about looking 30 forever. It's about strength, clarity, independence, and living fully.
We're all getting older. But have you ever stopped to think about how you want to get older?
For me, aging with vitality isn't about chasing the newest anti-aging treatment or finding one magic supplement. It's about something much more important.
Can you get up from the floor? Carry your groceries? Travel? Play with your grandchildren? Think clearly? Sleep well? Laugh? Stay connected to the people you love? And continue doing the things that give your life meaning?
That's vitality.
Lifespan is only part of the story
We hear a lot about longevity these days — how do we live to 90? To 100? I'm interested in a slightly different question: How well are we going to live those years?
That's the idea behind healthspan — the portion of our lives we spend in good health and able to function well. I don't simply want more years. I want years with strength, energy, clarity, mobility, purpose, connection, and independence.
We can't control everything — but we aren't powerless
Genetics matter. Our medical history matters. Sometimes illness happens despite doing many things "right." But there are many things we can influence — what we eat, how much we move, whether we maintain our muscle and strength, how we sleep, how we respond to stress, our relationships, our environment, and whether we stay on top of appropriate medical care and screening.
That's where being proactive about our health becomes so important.
Don't Wait for a Crisis to Start Caring About Your Health
For much of my nursing career, I've watched people become interested in their health only after something happens — a diagnosis, a hospitalization, a fall, a frightening laboratory result. Suddenly we're asking: "What can I do?"
I would love for more of us to ask that question before the crisis. Not because doing everything "right" guarantees we'll never become sick — it doesn't. But because the choices we make every day can help support our overall health, function, resilience, and quality of life.
That's what Health & Vitality means to me. And I've simplified my approach into four areas:
Give your body what it needs.
Food is information as well as fuel. Our bodies require protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water, fiber, and thousands of naturally occurring compounds from food to function.
But nutrition shouldn't be one-size-fits-all. What's right for you may depend on your age, health history, medications, activity, metabolic health, digestive health, genetics, preferences, and goals.
Instead of asking "What is the perfect diet?" I prefer asking: "What does this person need?"
Sometimes that means looking more closely at nutrition. Sometimes additional information — such as appropriate laboratory testing, genetic or nutrigenomic testing, or microbiome testing — may provide useful clues.
The goal isn't perfection. It's personalization.
Support your body from within.
Our cells aren't simply sitting there waiting for things to happen to them. They're constantly receiving signals and responding to their environment.
Scientists have discovered cellular pathways involved in things like oxidative stress responses, metabolism, energy production, inflammation, and other normal cellular processes. Nutrition, movement, sleep, and other lifestyle factors can interact with some of these pathways.
One pathway I've studied and followed for many years is Nrf2, which helps regulate genes involved in the body's response to oxidative and cellular stress. Another area I'm fascinated by is mitochondrial health — how our cells produce and manage the energy necessary for virtually everything we do.
When I talk about activation, I'm talking about supporting these natural processes and pathways from within. This doesn't mean activating a pathway prevents or cures disease. It means we're learning more and more about how remarkably responsive the human body is to its environment.
Build strength for the life you want to live.
When we think about exercise, too many of us immediately think about weight loss. As we get older, I want us thinking about something else: Function.
Can you get out of a chair without using your hands? Can you climb stairs? Can you carry your suitcase? Can you maintain your balance? Can you walk through an airport? Can you get down on the floor and get back up?
Muscle, strength, mobility, balance, and cardiovascular fitness become increasingly important as we age. Movement isn't punishment for what you ate — movement is an investment in your future independence.
You don't have to become an athlete. Walk. Lift something. Work on your balance. Stretch. Dance. Swim. Garden. Find ways to keep your body doing what it was designed to do: Move.
Your body needs time to recover.
We live in a culture that celebrates being busy. But our bodies also need restoration.
Sleep matters. Stress matters. Relationships matter. Purpose matters. Joy matters. So do laughter, prayer, meditation, breathing, time outside, music, meaningful relationships, and simply allowing ourselves moments when we're not accomplishing something.
Restoration doesn't mean doing nothing. Restoration is part of taking care of your health.
Staying involved with family, friends, community, hobbies, learning, volunteering, faith, or whatever gives your life meaning can be an important part of living well as we age.
What Does Aging With Vitality Look Like?
It will look different for each of us. For one person, vitality might mean:
Vitality isn't about comparing yourself with somebody else. It's about maintaining as much ability as possible to participate in your own life.
Start Before You Think You Need To
You don't have to wait until you're sick. And you don't have to change everything tomorrow. Pick one thing.
- Maybe you need to Nourish yourself better.
- Maybe it's time to learn more about Activation and cellular health.
- Maybe you've stopped Moving and need to rebuild strength.
- Or perhaps your body is telling you that you desperately need to Restore.
Start there. Then build. Small choices repeated over time become habits, and our habits help shape how we live.
I don't want to simply add years to your life.
I want to help you add more life to your years.
Nourish. Activate. Move. Restore.
Your Voice. Your Choice. Your Health.
